Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD)
Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) is a chemical compound used primarily in papermaking as a sizing agent. This product is added to paper to reduce its absorbency, which improves the ink or toner receptivity of the paper surface. AKD is particularly effective as a sizing agent for paper and board made from recycled fibers.
The use of AKD as a sizing agent offers several advantages, including:
- Improved printability: AKD-treated paper exhibits better ink holdout and print quality due to reduced ink penetration and improved ink adhesion.
- Enhanced water resistance: AKD imparts water repellency to paper, making it resistant to moisture and humidity.
- Reduced environmental impact: AKD is biodegradable and does not pose significant environmental hazards when used in papermaking processes.
